Iulia Maxima, Valencia (89-117 AD)

Below Roman inscription is found on a family tombstone from the Era of Trajan (89-117 AD), in the Archeological Museum Almoina, Valencia. This inscription has two sections and is part of a monumental family grave.

The inscription on the left mentions the family ‘stemma’ of Antonius and Iulius. Julia Maxima dedicates an inscription to her son, who surely must have died at a very young age. Also, she dedicates this inscription to her father, who was a council member and decurion of the veterani. The cognomen Niger of the grandfather and grandson was, apparently, widely known. Julia Maxima could be the mother or the grandmother of Antonia C.f. Maximilla (...).
